I was reading through an old issue of O, The Oprah Magazine the other day, and I came across this quote from Jeannette Walls (who apparently heard it from a friend). Thought I’d share…
Secrets are like vampires. They suck the life out of you, but they can only survive in the darkness. Once they’re exposed to the light, there’s a moment of horror, of recognition, but then poof—they lose their power over you.
~ Jeannette Walls (in the November 2009 issue of O, The Oprah Magazine)
I could write a nice long post about secrets—how they bind up your energy and impact your health and well-being—but I think I’m just going to say this:
The freedom that I gained when I broke my silence about the abuse and started telling all the secrets—I wouldn’t trade that for anything. My voice is more important to me than my safety. For me, telling = healing. ‘Nuff said.
